Reopening of the 'Bird cage Court' September 2009
Youngsters in the community have been enjoying Fun Fridays at Prenton Lawn Tennis Club for many years, but recent degeneration of the surfaces has meant that their favourite ‘birdcage’ court has been out of commission due to unsafe crumbling and cracking. Fortunately Community Funding for Merseyside came to the rescue and made a generous contribution towards the cost of resurfacing the court and providing equipment for all children to enjoy the sport of tennis.
The court was quickly resurfaced and will be repainted in its customary
green colours in the Spring when the weather is more clement. On 25th September, there was a special Fun Friday event to showcase the new court. Chris Thomas, Chairman of PLTC, ceremoniously cut the ribbon and declared the court open and fit for use both now and throughout the winter.
The rise of Andy Murray through the world rankings has generated a keen interest in children who want to take up the sport. Prenton LTC opens its doors to children in the local community every Friday so that they can have regular fun sessions with qualified coaches in a safe environment. Thereafter children are encouraged to improve and play regularly in squads and teams. The Club has many links with local schools through its coach, Stef Cantillon and has full support of Wirral Tennis Development Officer Chris Thelwall.
September 2009 Club Captains Annual Report
The season of 2009 has been the most successful in the history of Prenton L.T.C, and, as Club Captain, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate everybody who represented P. L.T.C during the summer season.
Our 2nd team, captained by Gill Peters, successfully gained promotion to the 2nd Division as Division 3 Champions. Tim Pemberton captained our 3rd team and they also gained promotion as Division 5 Champions and therefore will be playing in the 4th Division next season. To complete the treble, the 4th team captained by Jenny Peters and Nick Sharp, swept the board and can look forward to playing in the 5th Division next year. Despite a valiant effort by the 1st team, they were unable to retain 1st Division status.
I am also delighted by the success of our men’s team who retained their shield for the second year running. The success of all these teams means that we will be proudly displaying 4 championship shields in the clubhouse over the next 12months.
I would also like to take the time to acknowledge the friendly teams, co-ordinated by Brenda White and John Edwards and thank them for representing the club so enthusiastically.
I do hope our winter teams can follow on from this performance through the winter and I look forward to seeing some great matches in the winter and also in the forthcoming round robins.
As this has been my first year as Club Captain, I can honestly say it has been both enjoyable and rewarding and once again thank you all for your continued support.
